Inside our tent, I lay beside Ellie, but I barely slept. The few times I was able to close my eyes, Damara visited me. In my dreams, she teased and taunted me, showing me her magnificent powers and places where she found the heart flower, and how I would never beat her.

“Better surrender now,” she said.

Well, that was something that would never happen.

In the end, nobody slept much, because after our little adventure last night, we had gone to bed late, and we woke up right before the sun was up.

When I walked out of the tent, I stilled.

“Ramon!”

Seated beside the fire, he glanced at me over his shoulder. “Morning.”

At that, the others stepped out of the tents, surprised to see Ramon back.

I sat beside him. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” he said, his voice low. “A little tired, but fine.”

Taking Ramon’s other side, Theron punched his brother’s shoulder. “Never do that again, idiot.”

Ramon rubbed his shoulder. “No hitting, man. I’m sore.” Theron hit him again. “Hey!”

“Let’s see if you learn not to be so heroic now,” Theron said, his voice tight. He might try not showing it, but we all knew he had struggled with Ramon’s disappearance last night.

Artan took a seat across the fire. “What happened to the dragon?”

“Felix and I were able to distract him,” Ramon said. “He followed us for a while, but then we had to hide in a valley and wait it out. It took the dragon a while to give up on finding Felix and me, but eventually he left.”

Frowning, I looked around. “Where’s Felix?”

“I’ll take you to him soon.”

“What do you mean?”

Ramon sighed. “On our way back, we found a place …” He shuddered. “Felix is there, waiting for us.”

Artan stiffened. “What place?”

Ramon glanced toward Cora and Rye, then locked his eyes with Artan’s. “I think you all should see it.”

“Then take us there,” Theron said.

Ramon shook his head. “Eat first. Trust me. You won’t be able to eat after.”

What did he mean by that? But Ramon didn’t explain anything else. He just told us to hurry and eat so we could go.

This time, no one went out to buy food. We just ate the snacks we still had and called it breakfast. Hopefully, we would be done here soon. I needed real food.

Like the day before, we broke up camp and took our things back to the van. Then, with the essentials—water and weapons—we set out through the forest after Ramon.

The tension around the group felt like a whip about to crack, and the silence was maddening. It was easy to get lost in my troubled mind. I needed a distraction. But everyone seemed so focused on their own thoughts, I decided to focus on keeping one foot in front of the other.

It took us an hour to hike up the hill and arrive at the place Ramon had told us about. He stopped at the edge of a valley and pointed down. “This way.”

We went down what seemed like a path around the valley, until it opened into a big pit.
